Protected Areas offer a cost effective solution to the impacts of climate change, according to a new book from IUCN, The Nature Conservancy, the United Nations Development Programme, Wildlife Conservation Society, the World Bank and WWF.
Protected areas play a major role in reducing climate changing carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere.
Fifteen percent of the world’s terrestrial carbon stock - 312 Gigatonnes - are stored in protected areas around the world. In Canada, over 4,000 million tons of carbon dioxide is sequestered in 39 national parks, estimated to be worth $39-87 billion in carbon credits. In the Brazilian Amazon, protected lands are expected to prevent 670,000 km² of deforestation by 2050, representing 8 billion tons of avoided carbon emissions.
Protected areas also serve as natural buffers against climate impacts and other disasters, providing space for floodwaters to disperse, stabilizing soil against landslides and blocking storm surges. It has been estimated that coastal wetlands in the United States provide $23.2 billion a year in protection against flooding from hurricanes.
And protected areas can keep natural resources healthy and productive so they can withstand the impacts of climate change and continue to provide the food, clean water, shelter and income communities rely upon for survival. Thirty three of the world’s 100 largest cities derive their drinking water from catchments within forest protected areas.

The idea for realising this dossier was borne in the frame of the seminar "Creation of ecological networks between alpine protected areas" which was organised by the Alpine Network of Protected Areas (ALPARC) on 7 and 8 November 2005 in Berchtesgaden, Germany.
The background report which is part of the dossier "Ecological networks" contains relevant information on the instruments that play an important role in the establishment of ecological networks at global, pan-European, European, and national level. Although this report makes no claim to be exhaustive, it provides brief information on the most important instruments, such as conventions, legislation, regulations and programmes connected with ecological networks. In addition to the report, news, publications and links provide further information on the topic.

SWIFCOB – Dialogue entre acteurs de la biodiversité
Le Swiss Forum on Conservation Biology SWIFCOB réunit les différents acteurs des sciences et de la société dans le domaine de la biodiversité. Le congrès est une plate-forme d’échange dédiée aux défis à relever en matière de biodiversité. En outre, SWIFCOB a pour vocation de susciter le débat autour de sujets d’actualité liés à cette thématique. Le Forum Biodiversité Suisse de l’Académie des sciences naturelles (SCNAT) organise chaque année le congrès avec le soutien et la collaboration de différents partenaires.
Le congrès s’adresse aux experts de l’administration, des bureaux d’écologie appliquée et des ONG, aux entreprises et associations du secteur privé et aux scientifiques. Il est soutenu par l’OFEV et l’OFAG.

will focus on valorization, use and management of Alpine resources from local to macroregional scale, regrading four main aspects: Alpine branding; the use of Alpine resources from past to present; the use of Alpine resources from present to future; and governance of Alpine resources. Finally, the use of local resources has to be discussed in the context of an Alpine macroregion. All these aspects will be deepened by workshops.

ALPARC festeggia i suoi 25 anni nel Monêtier-les-Bains, Parco Nazionale degli Ecrins.
Con 5 partner del progetto OpenSpaceAlps e 10 partner del progetto HEALPS2, ALPARC e i partner del progetto hanno completato con successo questi progetti Alpine Space.
La piattaforma regionale ALPARC CENTR'ALPS è presente con un punto di contatto con il proprio personale a Immenstadt (DE).
Progetto Spazio Alpino “PlanToConnect” (il progetto si basa sui risultati di ALPBIONET2030). Obiettivo: integrazione della connettività ecologica nella pianificazione territoriale della regione alpina.
Lancio di due progetti dello Spazio Alpino: “LiveAlpsNature” (LeadPartner ALPARC). Obiettivo: misure di orientamento dei visitatori delle aree protette alpine attraverso offerte innovative (OneHealthApproach) e moderne piattaforme digitali per le attività all'aperto. “AlpsLife” (ALPARC, partner centrale del progetto). Obiettivo: fornire metodi per il monitoraggio congiunto della biodiversità e un sistema di allerta precoce alpino per la perdita di specie e habitat.
