On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, ALPARC - the Alpine Network of Protected Areas, launches a contest titled “Connecting people, mountains and nature”. Since 1995, ALPARC has promoted an intensive exchange among the Protected Areas in the Alps and has enabled the Protected Areas to collaborate together in order to create solid links on shared goals and concerns.
The land art & photo contest “Connecting people, mountains and nature” aims to highlight individuals building the network ALPARC and to strengthen the link between people and nature. The contest involves staff members of the Alpine Protected Areas as well as the general public depending on the categories of the contest.

Registration for the contest is now open and participants can submit their pictures until the 20th of December 2015 at this link: http://alparc.org/photocontest/

The contest includes 3 categories. The first two categories incorporate the practice of Land Art.

1. LAND ART SELF-PORTRAIT
Within this category, the participants are invited to create their “land art self-portrait” by using natural materials. The objective is to highlight the human side of the network by showing the faces of the people who work behind the administrations and organizations of the parks and reserves in the Alps.
This category is reserved to staff members of the Protected Areas only.
Important: the participants must check first if the practice of land art is allowed in the place they have chosen for their artwork.

2. THEMATIC LAND ART ILLUSTRATION
In this category, people are invited to illustrate and express in a creative and original way the slogan “Connecting people, mountain and nature” by the means of Land Art, using natural materials. The main aim is to invite people to go out in the nature and create a Land Art work, share their creations and visions and be aware of the importance to be in contact with nature.

This category is open to the general public, everybody can participate.
Important: the participants must check first if the practice of land art is allowed in the place they have chosen for their artwork.

3.  “MY FAVOURITE PLACE IN A PROTECTED AREA” – TEXT & PICTURE

In this category, participants are invited to send a photograph of their favorite place in an alpine Protected Area: a spot they have a special connection with, a place where they feel happiest or with a special story or memory... The place shown in the picture can be a very specific natural or cultural element, or a landscape.
This category is open to the general public, everybody can participate.
Participants are asked to send their picture with a short text, to explain the reasons of their choice, to express the emotion or feelings linked to this place and/or to tell the story behind it.

Send us your best picture, impress the jury, and maybe you are the winner of one of our great prizes.

The participation is free of charge. For further information, rules and prizes related to each category, please read the “Terms and Conditions”.

Alpine resources will play a crucial role in the development of the Alpine region. They  generate genuine ownership as well as technological, social and cultural innovation, and economic valuation. Due to the natural, social, cultural and economic aspects of Alpine resources, they are key to sustainable development in the region.

The eleventh ForumAlpinum 2014 (17.-19. September 2014 in Darfo Boario Terme -Val Camonica, Italy)was jointly organised by the International Scientific Committee for Alpine Research ISCAR and the Mountain University in Edolo, an interdepartmental centre of the University of Milan, Italy. The forum was supported by the Italian Council of Ministries and the Lombardy Region.

The proceedings provide insights into ongoing and planned research, concepts and actions that focus on the use, valorisation and management of Alpine resources. The main results of ForumAlpinum 2014 can be summarised in three statements: (1) Alpine resources create relevant assets for (sustainable) regional development. (2) Additional efforts are needed to ensure a sustainable use of Alpine resources. (3) Mountain-related resource policies are required.

The proceedings in English of this wide-ranging conference, published by the Austrian Academy of Sciences ÖAW, are now available here: http://epub.oeaw.ac.at/ForumAlpinum14

The Italian version was published by Biblion Edizioni and is available here: http://www.unimontagna.it/web/uploads/2015/10/Proceedings_ITA_ForumAlpinum.pdf

This brochure presents the long-term cooperation between protected areas in the Alps and the Carpathians that has officially existed since 2002, the International Year of Mountains. Following a political initiative, ALPARC guided the creation of the Carpathian Network of Protected Areas (CNPA), for which its own organisation served as a model. Many joint activities and exchange meetings were organized during the last 13 years. This publication presents an overview and evaluation of this partnership.
