  •  Article 1 : About the contest

ALPARC, the Alpine Network of Protected Areas, located at 256 Rue de la République, 73000 Chambéry, France, organizes a Land Art & Photo contest to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The theme of the contest is “Connecting people, mountains and nature”. Participation in the Land Art & Photo contest is free of charge. The contest is open to amateurs and professionals of all nationalities.The contest is divided into three categories, described under Article 2. Participation to Category 2 and Category 3 is open to everyone who practices photography. Participation to Category 1 is only open to staff members of Alpine Protected Areas.

The participation of those under 18 is permitted, provided that they have the permission of their parents or legal guardians. If the photo of an entrant under 18 years of age is chosen, ALPARC may ask for written parental or guardian permission. If this permission cannot be provided, ALPARC has the right to disqualify the entrant.  Participation in the contest implies understanding of and agreement to the present terms and conditions.

  • Article 2 : Categories

The photo contest is divided into three categories, described below. Category 1 and Category 2 incorporate the practice of “Land Art”. For this contest, “Land Art” is defined as follows: the practice of creating an ephemeral work of art with and in nature, using local natural materials such as stones, sand, wood, water, leaves, et cetera.
It is not forbidden to include materials that were not directly found on the site where the work of Land Art is made. However, the jury will assess favorably a creative use of the natural materials directly at hand.

  •     Category 1 – Land Art self-portrait  - Protected Areas’ staff members only

Instruction:
Participants in this category are invited to create their self-portrait by means of Land Art, and to take a photo of this “Land Art self-portrait”.
Participants are invited to submit two photos: one photo portrait of themselves, and one photo of their Land Art self-portrait.
Who can participate in this category?
This category is only open to staff members of the Alpine Protected Areas.

  • Category 2 – Thematic Land Art Illustration of the contest theme “Connecting people, mountains and nature” - General public

Instruction:
Illustrate in a creative way what the contest theme “Connecting people, mountains and nature” means to you, by means of Land Art, and take a photo of your artwork.
Who can participate in this category?
This category is open to the general public, which means that everyone can participate.

  • Category 3 – Photo and text illustrating “My favorite spot in a Protected Area” – General public

Instruction: participants are invited to take a photo of one spot in the Alpine Protected Area they like particularly: a spot they have a special connection with, or the place where they feel happiest. The place illustrated in the picture could thus be a specific natural element or a larger landscape.

Participants are invited to send one photo, accompanied by a short text (story) that tells why they have chosen this place, the story or special memory linked to this place, with a maximum of 100 words (in English, German, French, Italian or Slovene).  The jury will assess the combination of both the text and picture.
 Who can participate in this category?
This category is open to the general public, which means that everyone can participate.

  • Article 3 : Ethics

Any breach of the ethics described in this chapter will constitute a breach of the Terms and Conditions.
This contest complies with nature protection and the aims and objectives of the Alpine Protected Areas. Participants must, when they are in a protected area, at all times respect the rules and regulations of the area. These may include restrictions to the movement of natural elements or even a complete prohibition of the practice of Land Art. Participants are reminded of the fact that the photos in Category 1 and Category 2 can also be taken outside a protected area. Participants are also reminded of the fact that Category 3 does not involve the practice of Land Art, which makes it possible to participate in this category even in an area with a high level of protection.
Participants must not do anything to injure or distress any animals or destroy their habitat while doing land art and taking pictures. If ALPARC suspects that an entry has been achieved through unethical practices, the entry will be disqualified.

  • Article 4 : Types of images

Only digital images are accepted to the contest, in jpg or tiff format. Photos may be in colour or black and white. Their short side must have a size of at least 2200 pixels.
Minimal adjustments of colour, tone, contrast, saturation and brightness are permitted, as long as a natural look is created that stays as close to the original image as possible. The photos must be free of any printed text, information or frames.
Entrants are not permitted to submit images that have been awarded any prize, recommendation or other award in any national or international competition at the time of entry. Participation in the contest implies that the submitted images do not infringe any third party rights.Images of pets, multiple exposure or digitally manipulated images are not eligible to enter the contest.Any entry that is not of an acceptable technical quality or does not conform to the criteria stated above will be disqualified.

  • Article 5 : Submission of images  

Images must be submitted by using the registration form on the web page of the contest: http://alparc.org/photocontest/ Participants must create an account and can then submit their photos and texts. The registration form must be filled in completely.Every participant can submit a maximum of 1 image in every category. If the registration form is not filled in completely, the entry will be disqualified.

  • Article 6: Copyright

The author of each work remains the exclusive owner of his/her work. The photos and texts submitted to the contest can be presented to show the results of this particular contest (for example by means of an exposition, or on the website, newsletter, brochures, postcards, and other communication materials from ALPARC) always mentioning the name of the author. Also, as this contest is meant to celebrate the 20th birthday of ALPARC and to show the human dimension of the network, the photos will be used internally by ALPARC on non-profit communication materials related to the celebration year. ALPARC may, for the purpose stated above, change the dimensions of the picture or add text to it. The photos will thus not be used to compose any picture library for general use, that is: not related to the photo contest itself or the celebration of the 20th birthday of ALPARC. The photos will never be used for any commercial purposes. ALPARC cannot in any way transfer rights of use to third parties.

  • Article 7: Time frame

The contest takes place from the 8th of September 2015 until the 20th of December 2015. The deadline for application is the 20th of December 2015 at 23:59.

  • Article 8: Deliberation of the jury

The jury is composed of:

- Patrick Folliet, Parc national de la Vanoise, France
- Peter Oggier, Parc naturel Pfyn-Finges, Switzerland, member of the ALPARC council
- Josef Hackhofer, Amt für Naturparke Südtirol, Italy
- Martin Hartmann, Nationalpark Gesäuse, Austria
- Rolf Eberhardt, Naturpark Nagelfluhkette, Germany
- Martin Šolar, Slovenia, member of the ALPARC council
And one member of the ALPARC coordination unit

The photos in Category 1 will be evaluated based upon their originality, aesthetic value, the composition and/or diversity of the materials used, the extent to which the natural materials directly at hand are used in a creative way, and the way in which the land art portrait refers to the photo portrait. The photos in Category 2 will be evaluated based upon their originality, aesthetic value, the composition and diversity of the materials used, the extent to which the natural materials directly at hand are used in a creative way, and their representation of the theme (connecting people, mountains and nature). The photos and texts in Category 3 will be evaluated based upon their originality, the composition, aesthetic value, and their link to the personal story.
The winners will be announced during the General Assembly of ALPARC, which will be held latest February 2016. Winners will be informed by email.
Jury members and members of the ALPARC coordination unit can submit their pictures to the contest, but are excluded from winning prizes.

  • Article 9: Prizes

In each category, the best pictures will be chosen, ranked, and accordingly awarded with prizes belonging to that category.

  •    Prizes Category 1: Land Art self-portrait (Alpine Protected Area staff only)

1st prize:  A two-night stay for two people in an Alpine Protected Area, with personal meet & greet with a staff member of this protected area.
       - Travel is not included in the prize

      - The protected area will be chosen by ALPARC, in consultation with the winner and in accordance with the hosting possibilities of the parks
      -  The prize will be realized within a year after winning
      - Value: ca. 250 €
2nd prize: a basket of labeled Alpine products with a value of 50€ + photo book “Être paysan en Vanoise”*
3rd prize: a basket of labeled Alpine products with a value of 40€ + photo book “Être paysan en Vanoise”*
4th to 10th prize: The ’20 years ALPARC’ buff and the Multivision “For the Alps” DVD

  • Prizes Category 2: Land Art Illustration of the contest theme “Connecting people, mountains and nature”

1st prize: A special postcard with the winning picture on it is created, the winner receives 200 printed pieces of this postcard + a basket of labeled Alpine products with a value of 50€  + DVD “des Gypaètes et des Hommes”*
2nd prize: a basket of labeled Alpine products with a value of 50€ + DVD “des Gypaètes et des Hommes”*
3rd prize: a basket of labeled Alpine products with a value of 40€ + DVD “des Gypaètes et des Hommes”*

  •  Prizes Category 3: Photo illustration of “My favorite spot in a Protected Area”

1st prize: a basket of labeled Alpine products, with a value of €75 + DVD “des Gypaètes et des Hommes”*
2nd prize: a basket of labeled Alpine products with a value of 50€ + DVD “des Gypaètes et des Hommes”*
3rd prize: a basket of labeled Alpine products with a value of 40€ + DVD “des Gypaètes et des Hommes”*

* The DVD “des Gypaètes et des Hommes” (Bearded vultures and men) and the photo book “Être paysan en Vanoise” (Being peasant in Vanoise) were offered by Vanoise National Park.
Both the book and the DVD are in French.

 

  •  Article 10: Interpretation of the terms and conditions

Any difficulty relating to the application or the interpretation of these terms and conditions will be ultimately decided by ALPARC association, whose decisions are final.
